Three Quotation Thursday...What Do You Think?

"They're certainly entitled to think that, and they're entitled to full respect for their opinions... but before I can live with other folks I've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience. " -Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird" (Harper Lee)

Don't you wonder how some people live with themselves? Sometimes my conscience works overtime...I fret over the smallest little thing that I might have said that might have maybe sometime in the oddest little circumstance PERHAPS have given somebody the wrong impression. What is it with people who just don't seem to have a sense that other people and their feelings matter? I just can't understand it...

"Back in 2002, Edwards sent me a Ken doll dressed in bathing trunks, Rio de Janeiro Ken, with a teasing note, because he didn’t like my reference to him as a Ken doll in a column. In retrospect, the comparison was not fair - to Ken." -Maureen Dowd on John Edwards

This just makes me laugh!

"In the South, people take great pleasure in other people's lives, they consider them works of art, eccentrics are discussed and doted upon." -John Berendt

Truer words were never spoken...as long as our eccentrics are of a reasonably sweet disposition they are community treasures. Is it like that in other regions? Could be... I just don't have a point of reference.

  1. I totally understand what you mean about people and their conscience. I am dealing with this issue at work right now and it is so frustrating! I have lost all respect for this one person who seems to think she is better than everyone else. :-(

  3. Great quotes. Let's see if I can come up with any wise words....ummmm.

I agree with Petunia, the conscience quote caught my attention. Although it's nice to have the approval of others, you have to do what YOU know is right, and if you don't, then you have to live with yourself.

I'm learning that I can't change other people, but if I keep my own standards and morals high, I can sleep at night with no regrets.

  4. I loved your quotes, and I agree, so much has to come from within. If you can't live with yourself, what do you really have? Sure, all of us want to be accepted and approved of, but at the end of the day, do we feel good about what we've done to effect those same affirmations of self? But being true to yourself is a learning experience, I think. An ever evolving sort of thing...the choices you make in your 20s are so much different than in your 30s. I am sure that will be true of pretty much each decade in life.

I don't know...I think life is hard sometimes and you just muddle through the best you can, hoping you can at least sleep at the end of the day (well, that's assuming you won't have a child crawling in bed with you anyway....)

BTW, had to say I love Charleston and will be down that way in a couple weeks, really looking forward to it. I haven't been since my 10th wedding anniversary a couple years ago. Also saw that you like Savannah, my husband and I just went there for our 12th anniversary. Charleston and Savannah, so similar, yet so different. Love them both.

Hope you have fun visiting your daughter up at school, another funny coincidence, I used to live in Anderson for a couple of years.

Anyway, enough of my rambling, have a great weekend (or what's left of it anyway.)

  5. The conscience quote is SO TRUE!! I do that too, find myself lying in bed at night sometimes mulling over a little thing I might have said and whether or not it was taken well or why I got distracted and did I say bye to the lady I was talking to in Wal Mart or did I just wander off?

Love the eccentric quote!! SO TRUE in the south! Have you seen the monologue with Julia Sugarbaker on crazy people in the south?
Here is the link, I love it!

  7. These are wonderful quotes. The second one just cracked me up. And the third is so true. I've lived in the Midwest and on the East coast and I think that this is much truer in the South than anywhere else. DH always says that is one of the many things he loves about the South, we put our crazies on the front porch to say hey to the neighbors instead of putting them in an institution :) Kathy

  8. Great quotes & yes, for me too, the John Edwards quote is classic! I have the most difficult time trying to figure out the lack of conscience or respect that a lot of people seem to exude. I just don't get it! I don't know how they live or how they sleep ~ lots of questions for me.

    I love your blog!
