What's In a Name...

...in the case of Precious, our little maltese, not much. She looks cute, I'll give her that; however, her name should be Miss I Am the Center of the Universe and Will Fuss and Whine and Get All in a Dither When I Don't Get My Way.

I've got news for old Precious...I, Belle, am Miss I Am the Center of the Universe and Will Fuss and Whine and Get All in a Dither When I Don't Get My Way and she's not taking my spot! To top it off, I'm just not much of an animal lover...mother (remember my mother???) didn't let us have pets growing up.

When Lorelai was about ten, she wanted a puppy worse than anything. We had an ornery cat and two dead dogs who had lived outside before going to their great reward in dog heaven. A new dog needed to be able to stay inside where it could get some attention and therefore had to be small, not shed, and definitely not smell. I saw the cutest little Maltese one day and got the bright idea (yes, it's MY fault) that a Maltese would be perfect for our household. We found a breeder four hours away and got on her list. The night she called to tell us our puppy was ready, Lor danced around the house and laughed until she cried...she was BEYOND happy!

Bright and early on the Saturday of 4th of July weekend in 2000, we hopped in the car and headed up I-95 to get the pup. Twelve hours later, having survived brushes with several crazy holiday drivers, we were back at home with the new member of the family.

Precious has never quite understood her role in this family. She thinks that she is a person. She is rude when we have guests. Lorelai has always loved hugging and cuddling up with Precious but not so much the washing and feeding. Hank quickly became the primary caregiver and he has her utterly and completely spoiled. They sit together in the recliner every night and watch television. She cries when he leaves and when we all go away, we have to get someone to come check on her as she is too sensitive to leave at the kennel. If she doesn't like the way the person looks she won't go out so we had to talk the lady who cleans our house once a week into coming back when we're gone...Precious likes her. If Daisy is out of town, we can't go out of town.
IT'S MADNESS....PRECIOUS IS A DOG!!!!

Don't forget about the Valentine's Day Swap!!!!

Precious will get upset...

  6. ♥ Too funny! I'm not much of an animal person... I don't like the fact that I have to pick up after 6 people as it is and can't see adding animals to the mix. It's sad, I know, and my poor kids would just love a dog or a cat! :)

  7. Precious is such an adorable little fur baby. I have 5 fur babies that are very much like Precious & wouldn't give up any of them. ☺

  8. What a cute post and dog. I had to fight for 10 years to get Sam and Mr. C is still not crazy about him. He didn't have a dog growing up and I think that is a big reason.

  13. I feel your pain - mine is the center of the universe in my household too - BUT she is 100lbs+.....but she is a beautiful baby, and I love her more than many family members.

Can't wait for the Valentine's Day Swap. Have a good day.

  14. Saying I am not an animal lover, is a huge understatement. I have asthma, which has always been the excuse for no pets.

Precious is just that! Malteses are one of the few breeds that I can honestly say I find cute. Normally, I have to pretend that I find animals to be anything more than potential biters, dirt makers, and eaters of smelly food.

As soon as Alexandra (aka PG) moved to Orlando, she bought herself a doggie, a Maltese! I do see the appeal. Huey came home with her for a visit at Thanksgiving. He is so attached to his mommy, that he would cry when she left the room.

If I show Briana (aka BG) your photos, she will start pestering me for a doggie of her own. There is a teensy chance when we finally do move to Florida, that I will get her a Maltese. I haven't told anyone that!

  20. She really is precious. We have so many patients who are every bit as spoiled as this little princess, but at least we know the owners love and care for them and would do anything for them. But isn't it funny how they so often do not live up to their names? One particular patient, "Sweet Pea" comes to mind. Believe me, she is anything but (and I have the scars to prove it lol). Gotta love em. We always say that God made them cute so you won't kill them! Great post, Kathy

  26. Too funny. Why is it that our children beg to have a pet, make promises they will never keep such as feeding, cleaning up after, bathing and so on, only to be over the thrill in a weeks time? Some how our children's first dog (Max) became my husband's best friend by the second week in our home.

    Have a great day,
    Jo

    PS~love the dress :)

  30. Oh, Precious is beautiful!
I had a Bichon Frise for 15 years, and now I am totally over having a dog that needs to go to the beauty parlor more than I do! My next dog will be low-maintenance.
