Another Week Becomes History

...and another week gone, but not forgotten !!  The Monday holiday was quite a blessing, might I add.  The remainder of the week was routine...meaning that I hear, "Mrs. Southern...I have a question..." at LEAST every five minutes...sometimes more.  Generally the questions are pretty easy to  handle.  It's when I hear an adult utter the words, "Mrs. Southern, we have an issue..." that my blood runs cold.   Oddly, the issue is usually no big deal, but the seriousness of the tone and the looks on the faces of the adults with the "issues" causes me a split second of terror. Not quite sure how to address this particular challenge just yet. Perhaps it's my own insecurity as a new principal causing the moments of terror.  I know not...Any ideas?

Just got back from Clemson.  Getting away the last two weekends has been sheer joy.  If I stay home, I feel compelled to work.  If we go out of town and I "accidentally" leave the laptop home then I cannot POSSIBLY work and feel very relaxed when we return home.  Here are a few photos...

By the way, the other side lost....BADLY!

I seriously need to start training some other people to take pictures.  I'm NEVER in any of them.

We stopped by Green Grove on our way home to visit with mother and Ned for a little while.  Ned's birthday is in a few weeks and he's requested a cookout (what some of you Yankee friends of mine might call a barbeque, even when you aren't actually serving barbeque.)

I reckon we're going to be having a cookout sometime around October 3.  He doesn't ask for much, bless his heart.

Have a lovely week.  Here's wishing you NO "issues."

  1. Wishing you a good week too! When we first moved to Charleston (late '80s) for awhile I thought people there were just addicted to the color orange!!! Took me a while to figure out what orange was all about. Not sure where you are principal but wonder if you know Bill Smyth. I understand he just went to Wando as an assistant principal. Our boys were in elementary school when we were there. The oldest had Bill at Orange Grove. We were quite impressed. The next year, our son went to Buist Academy. Oh dear, I've been pretty long winded here. We are no longer in Charleston. Chicago now. Quite a difference!!

    Best,

  4. Hope you have a great, issue free week! Cait just had her first run in with a PITAP (pain in the a** parent) this week. I'm extremely proud of the way she's handling the situation. Problem is, this parent is also a faculty member as well as the cheerleading coach , her son is a football player who is also a band member. Dear Lord, this sounds like an episode of Glee, doesn't it? Glad that you are enjoying yourself and relaxing on the weekends. All work and no play and all that jazz... Kat

  5. Glad you had another fun day at Clemsom! Love seeing all that orange, but what's up with the purple pants? Pretty cool looking! Lorelai is beautiful and what a great picture of she and her Dad. Yes, you need to get someone to take your picture. Have a wonderful week. Hope things are settling down at school for you. Love & blessings from NC!

  6. Glad you had a good weekend. My first 2 weeks were fabulous; last week all the at-risk kids crashed and almost burned. Amazing how many F's they can accumulate in a short 2 weeks. Gah!!!

About the "issues". Heard our new football coach say today that his dad, Vince Dooley, gave him one piece of advice: {not a quote here cause my mind isn't that good} but "be prepared every day for a crisis." I guess as educators that's how we need to live, too. And my principal hated those words, too, and he had many years of experience. So you're doing great! Have a great week! xoxo

  8. QAs for adults with "issues", I think you just get to a point where they are grown students with similar issues. In other words, you are able to solve their problems as easily as the students in your own classroom when you were the teacher.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the picture of Lorelai with her Daddy. Melts my heart.

And for the cookout comment, rest assured I will be very careful about how I name our next BBQ/Cookout!
