My Sweetgrass Baskets and Happy Memorial Day

I hope you've been enjoying this weekend surge of posts. Alas, I go back to work bright and early in the morning. A bright thought though...in two weeks we'll begin our four day workweeks through the summer. Since I'm already going in at 7 AM and staying late, it won't be a change for me EXCEPT that I'll have Fridays off. I am doing SUCH a happy happy dance in my head right now.

I've been playing around with my new camera and took pictures of my sweetgrass basket collection. Some are displayed and others are truly used...hence the photos of the messy key basket and even messier make-up basket. (EDIT-Just realized that a photo of Lorelai holding a pair of shoes that she wants me to buy for her slipped in to the slide show...just ignore that unless, of course, YOU would like to purchase that nifty pair of Kate Spade wedges for her!!)

The making of these baskets is a true art...one which has been passed down from generation to generation for hundreds of years. It's a dying art, not to mention that basketmakers are having a harder and harder time finding sweetgrass, which is why I try to buy one whenever I can. Maybe I'll give one away sometime. That would be a NEAT giveaway.

Happy Memorial Day...hope you're enjoying some start of the summer fun!

  5. You have such a nice collection of sweetgrass baskets. I am always fascinated to watch the ladies weave them when I come to Charleston. They are truly works of art! You will love your 4 day work week this summer. I work Monday through Thursday and enjoy being off on Friday. Love & blessings from NC!

  8. I too adore sweetgrass baskets. I don't have nearly as many as I would like though. They are expensive but they are SO worth it. Your collection is lovely.

  10. Oh, to be young, and able to easily walk in a heel, while buying baskets...yeah, that's what I am thinking.

  11. I love watching the ladies making the baskets every time I go to Charleston. I have no idea how they sit there in that heat and humidity all day long. It is definitely an art form.

  12. What a beautiful collection! Sorry for the late comment, trying to play catch up after all the hoopla over the last week. Let me know if you find anyone to buy those Kate Spades, I'll e-mail you for their number later :) Hope you have a great weekend. Kathy

  13. You have a beautiful collection! At USC in Columbia (I work as a tour guide there), there is a GIANT sweetgrass collection on display at the Visitor Center. It is the only stop before the Smithsonian! Very cool!
