You've got to laugh or....

...you'll go crazy and THAT won't help.

Yesterday, Hank's mother was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia and moderate Alzheimer's. Like we didn't already have our hands full with MY mother.

As I've said before, I could fill ten blogs with stories about Hank's side of the family but those are his stories not mine and he doesn't find as much humor in things as I do. Humor helps me cope...so shoot me.

He had a terrible go round with her after she had her own go round with the doctor after he told her she couldn't drive anymore and ought to move to assisted living. (We're going to just take over a wing at Green Grove...)

As Hank drove away last night with her car keys in his pocket, she informed him that she will "burn the house down" before she'll move to Green Grove.

Talk about being homeless...

  1. Oh dear.
At least you can still laugh.........
You have your hands full for sure.
Hanks mom is as funny as yours even if she doesn't mean to be.

  2. You and Hank are most definitely examples of the "Sandwich Generation" and I'm afraid you're getting squooshed.

I'm with you on the humor - 100%. The only way to survive Miss Southern Belle!! Hugs and Love to you. xoxo

  4. Oh! How they can get "aggressive" and so defiant!!

And you can turn blue in the face trying to convince them....'sorry, but that won't work!!

    I speak from experience!

Better to deal with it with a good sense of humor than getting all riled up and blowing off steam.....unfortunately, that was how it affected me!

    Bless both of you!!!

  5. I'm so, so sorry to hear about this. You two definitely have your hands full over there. But God couldn't have chosen two better people to care for their parents the way you two do. Praying....

  6. Oh my goodness. You really do have your hands full. I know that this is going to be very trying, but I also know that you will handle the situation with humor and grace. And feel free to vent when needed, that's what we are here for :) Kathy

  8. No, she'll move in with you and you will then want to burn down your house.

Good luck and keep your sense of humor.

  11. This is not funny, but my friend's grandmother swore she would not go to a nursing home. When her two daughters took her there to move in she had a heart attack and died that very day.

    Guess she meant it.

  12. Oh darling, I am so sorry! (I found your blog through Maxminimus) We dealt with alzhiemers with my grandmother, and with both my grandmother in law, and now my grandfather in law. It is a horrid, horrid disease! Hang in there (and yes, if you can occasionally laugh, it is better than crying!)

  13. Lord have mercy, this is all y'all need. I have to tell you something funny. Mama is 87 and beginning to repeat stuff big time!!! My brother called and scared me death. He said he had called her doctor and asked him to do an Alzheimers test on mama at her next appointment. Well mama went for her appt. and came home and told my brother she passed an alzheimers test with flying colors. My brother went by the doctor's office the next day and said "Listen, I don't think she'd tell me a story, but I wasn't sure if she really passed or not...." So she's just getting older and older:)
