The Finer Things in Life

I admit it....I become obsessed with things. Sometimes I settle down and moderate the obsession and it becomes a normal part of my life (like blogging) and sometimes my family just has to ride it out until I drop the obsession altogether (like wanting to become a caterer...one job...REALLY hard work).

I'm really really really obsessed with the Frugal Friday thing right now. Hank rolls his eyes at me and that's fine...I'll spend my savings on me. Wait...no...I can't spend my savings because then it won't be savings. (I never said I had a COMPLETE grasp of the concept...give me some time.)

Anyhow...I e-mailed Legare and Lorelai the other day and told them to send me a list of their favorite brands of toothpaste, shampoo, etc. and if I see those items on sale or have coupons I'll buy them.

I received this from Legare:
I don't suppose there are coupons for Kiehl's in the Sunday paper?

My reply:
Daddy and I thought that we were being good parents by exposing you to the finer things in life. We screwed up!
Love, Mama

(I know that "screwed up" isn't a very belle-ish thing to say, but it just seemed to fit...)

  1. LOL! I bought Demolition D a vibrating "kinda" disposable razor when he started having peach fuzz. It was a happy welcome to this new stage kind of thing. Then when the blades needed to be replaced and I saw how expensive they were I knew I goofed up! Should have just bought a good ol' bag of gillette disposable no thrill razors - which he now uses!

  2. I'm howling right now! Our Cait has a shoe obsession, so glad I taught her early never to pay retail. I got that part right, but the hair and bath products - I too have screwed up! Oh yes, and I encouraged her obsession with pedicures, figured that those poor feet deserved it after marching season. But she no longer has to march after this year, so . . . Kathy

  3. I am right there with you. I don't think any of mine of a clue as to what the word "frugal" means. I guess they will learn it when they pay their own bills.

  8. It's alright, at least they have good taste. My seven year old wants to "only" wear Lilly. Thank heavens for E bay. Check there, sometimes you can find great deals.

  9. Oh, I can so relate to the way you describe the obsessive part of you.

What a great way to put it.
"Sometimes I moderate it, sometimes they have to ride with it"...like looking in the mirror.

Oh, after reading this post, I think I may need to work on the frugal part too and be a better example to my little ones ")

  10. I'm joining the club on this one ~ I made the mistake of teaching my children to buy quality items so that they last ~ it's coming back to haunt me!

  15. My daughter changed her shampoo tastes when she struck out on her own. It struck me as funny, because when she lived at home, she swore the salon brands were very important to keeping her hair pretty. Last time we visited, I noticed she had store brand shampoo in her shower. Her hair appeared to look the same.

  16. Aaah, the finer things. Miss B has always been what I call the name brand kid and not by my choice! Girlfriend just has expensive tastes. We are working on the whole spend, save, give way of managing any money she has but it is still a work in progress.

  18. That's too much... I can't wait to hear how it goes... I am trying to be more frugal, but my frugality always costs me more in the end. I am obviously missing something.
