The Duggars and their almost 18 kids...

Do y'all know who I'm talking about...the people on TLC who have all of the kids whose names start with "J" and who live in Arkansas in a house they pretty much built themselves? They are very devout Baptists (not Southern, I don't think...a lot more "serious" and that's saying something) and are completely debt free even with all of those kids. That's REALLY saying something. As soon as I save up enough empty laundry detergent bottles, I'm going to try their homemade laundry detergent for a Frugal Friday post. It's supposed to make ten gallons and only cost a couple of dollars. SERIOUSLY...I am!

If you don't know who I'm talking about then you aren't going to be amused...heck, you might not be amused if you DO know.

I was just thinking about how conservative they are. Nothing wrong with that. It's just unusual to me because I know a lot of good, strong, people of faith (and am a person of faith myself) but I don't know anybody THAT conservative. The oldest just got married and didn't even kiss his fiance until their wedding ceremony (although the way that they held hands between the engagement and wedding was almost obscene...hard to explain...you'd have to watch "A Very Duggar Wedding.") Eventually, though, the odds are that at least one of those kids is going to rebel in one way or another.

I wonder how Jim Bob and Michelle will react when one of the girls insists on wearing pants or heaven forbid BERMUDA SHORTS? What if one of the boys brings home a Presbyterian or...GASP...an EPISCOPALIAN??

I'm just saying...

  1. I pretty much love that show...I always call my bff when it is on and say things like "your future husband jim bob and your 18 future kids are on tv"

  4. It gives me the creeps how the daughters say they grow their hair long for the Daddy!
And this woman who have birthed all these children. What is she thinking? Why do that to your body?
PS. Some things just rub The Bumpkin the wrong way.
Don't like these, but love the polygamists. Weird I am I say!

  5. Thanks for the well wishes for me and mom - she is going back to work today for a half day!

OK - the Duggars - they sort of creep me out. Not sure why, but I'm a little scared of them?

Let us know how the detergent turns out!

  6. hee hee, yes, I agree, the kids are so obedient that it is hard to imagine them rebeling, but THAT will be good TV!

    Have a great day!

  7. I am hooked on that show as well. The thing that amazes me is that everyone is always soooo calm. Mom never gets upset. Now you know with 18 kids you are going to get a little on edge occasionally! Thanks for commenting on my blog. You asked what a Kindle was. It was created by Amazon.com and you can download books, magazines, newspapers, etc.on to the device. It is wireless connection at its best. The price is much cheaper than hard copy and it takes only seconds to have the book ready to read. I know it sounds strange but if you go to Amazon.com it will explain it in great detail. It weighs only a few ounces and will be a dream to travel with. Thanks for asking and have a wonderful day!

  8. I just can't imagine being pregnant that many times!

  9. I've watched this show in sheer amazement! The non-kissing until marriage thing really got me. The cousin on the show always makes me laugh since she is obviously so different than her cousins!

I don't think this Episcopalian girl would have ever made it in this family!!

  10. Conservative? I think the word you're looking for is "bizarre."

  11. I sometimes see previews for that show while I'm watching Jon and Kate Plus 8...but that's as close as I've come to watching :)

  12. I completely agree! You can tell some of the older girls are a bit more "modern" because of how they wear their hair and the fact that they wear jewelry. I can see one of them rebelling soon!

  13. i love watching the duggars. while being a little crazy, they make some valid "living within means" points ...

i just couldnt imagine having that many kids!

  14. I find myself amazed and flabergasted (is that how you spell that?) everytime I see them on the today show. Can't wait for your post on the detergent - With Ocho back in the house, I notice he washes clothes EVERY day. Something has to give, and it might be me following your lead on being conservative!

Back to the Duggers, I find it amusing, every time they are interviewed they ask if there are more children in the future. Husband grins and says (sometimes with a hint of hesitation) he will leave that decision up to Michelle. Of course she is very open to it. But I think between the lines- he is saying NOOOOOOO! haha

  15. The show disturbs me. Maybe it is because I am....gasp....an Episcopalian....but I find it disturbing to have 18 children. How do they putting that many children through college? I am not one to judge (OK, yes I am...but...) where is the social, environmental, and economical responsibility here. Am I missing something?

  16. The cousin that visits is going to be the one who convinces one to rebel! :-) I love that cousin....

And I waited in anticipation of "A Very Duggar Wedding"... can you imagine not even kissing before your wedding? WOW

And you have to share... what's the detergent ingredients???

  17. that is great! I am sorry but I have to at least kiss my guy before we get married! Geez!

  18. I think they are strange. First of all, she needs to update her pilgrim look. Secondly, someone needs to tell her to shut the baby factory down. I've written a post about them, but never posted it. I just don't get it.

  19. Now, I am Mormon. And I did think for a while that they were maybe a breakaway sect of the Mormon church (they have nothing to do with the traditional Mormon church)called the FLDS...because of they style of clothes, number of kids..but I didnt see any other wives...Then I thought well maybe they are Mininights..and then I had to look them up...and you are right, they are Christian. I commend them for their modesty and the way they live. I think it's amazing! But you are right one of those kids is gonna break away! haha They have a book coming out called The Duggars 20 and counting!

  20. I could hardly watch the Duggar wedding, there hand holding and such made me so uncomfortable. Ugh.
I think they are super nice and it is a great way to live but not for me. And weird. Sorry, it just is.

  21. Thank you for the laugh!!!
    I really needed it!!

Yeh just wait untill one of the kids rebel it will be the talk of the town. little Jenny Cut her hair and added hilights. She will be the black sheep oh the family for sure.

  22. I agree with you. I do love the niece that comes around occasionally. I think her name is Amy, anyway, she's Jim Bob's only brother's only child and is a HOOT compared to the others. Never really sure that Mama Dugger really approves. A similar family at our Catholic Church (looks and dresses just like them) is always referred to as "Dugger look-a-likes".

  23. My 16 year old daughter loves the Duggars. She hasn't kissed a boy as of yet, so she would fit in perfectly. Then again, a few days ago, she asked me how old I was when I had my first kiss. "'cause ya know, mom, I think I would like to kiss a boy."

One never knows who will rebel. Just ask my mother in law. She did everything right and her son married ME!!! Even the letter begging him to reconsider, was to no avail. Sometimes kids go astray.

  24. I totally know what you talking about the way they held hands. Very strange. One of those kids is going to find out what the "real world" is like. I can only imagine what will happen then!

    ReplyDelete
  25. i love watching them!! and you are so right about that hand holding but i thought it was adorable hahahha

  26. They absolutely get on my last nerve! When I see anything about them, all I can do is shake my head in disbelief or shock or something. haha

    ReplyDelete
  27. I could only watch half of one episode of this show. I just really don't understand them. I mean - good for them, rah rah. I just don't think they make for very compelling television. Do you think the network is HOPING for one of the kids to slip up?

  28. These people are in ATIA. They probably have a home church, meaning they aren't members of a regular church. ATIA has all these standards, Jim Bob didn't think them up. And believe me, it is very legalistic and similar to a cult. Nothing but rules, rules, and more rules. Starting with letting God decide how many kids you are going to have. HELLO, like my Grandmama says, God also gave you a brain.... USE IT, lol. Anyway, our family was in it for a short while and I still have scars from it emotionally. I have a hard time watching the show. I feel sorry for the kids. Girls are told you are going to grow up, get married, and have babies. Thats it.

  29. Or as we are more commonly known....Whiskeypalians! That would sure be a shock! :) Thanks for the smile today!

  30. I can't imagine it is very good for the body to carry that m,any kids. I am all screwed up from 2. I don't watch the show but I might someday, nah, I won't. Creepy.

  31. I'm watching that show as I read this... funny. This episode is about their friend family visiting with 17 kids...aaaaaaaaahhh....
I completly agree, the hand holding was obscene! I hope they don't have a wild kid in the bunch...but you're right, there is bound to be one...

  32. From SC, the store is on Exit 28 off I-77 headed north. Go right coming off the exit, and the road dead ends shortly at Hwy 115. Just before you get to it, is a CVS to the right, and the Mill is right behind it. Hope you can make it sometime.

  33. I'm just saying...I probably agree with you.;)
Thanks for visiting my blog tonight!

  36. Bottom line, I think its creepy because its too perfect!

Seriously when have you ever seen that many kids together and someone hasn't hauled off and punched another! Never! Someone always has their hands or feet touching someone and then the kid is screaming! This is creepy because they don't have that!

I have a great kid but put him in the middle of that many kids and he will be wailing and getting wailed on! Its just kids to hit, scream, act up in all sense of the word but with the Duggers they dont and I really think thats what makes it weird.

Someone mention Jon and Kate- their kids act up, scream and do kid stuff! Know what I mean?!? No one thinks they are weird, at least I don't because they come off being normal and letting their kids do what kids do and thats interact with each other!

I really feel sad for the Duggers children, while their parents may mean well, one has to wonder are they ALL getting hugged enough.

So this is just my opinion. Great post by the way!

    Have a great day!

  37. Yes, this family is so strict and so different from every other family yet they are appealing aren't they? I think it's the mom's voice...so soothing!

But I still think they're CRAZY for having all of those kids!

  38. I used to watch this show. I haven't programed them into my newer DVR yet though. So I haven't seen it in a while. They fascinate me. Their lives are so ordered. I would think their lives would be utter chaos. Maybe they are and we just don't see it on the show. Anyway I will have to program them in again.

  39. You crack me up! LOL @ the holding hands comment & if one of the daughters wants to wear pants/bermuda shorts. Too funny :)

I went to school with a lot of PKs (pastor's kids) and MKs (missionary's kids). Can I just say for the record these were the most rebellious kids I have ever known. I am a woman of faith as well. I believe in raising my children in a realistic way that includes passing on my faith and beliefs, but preparing them for what the world might throw at them. If I don't, someone in the world will. I'd rather I info them of things while teaching them how to proper deal with these situation, then to let some crazy kids out them do the teaching.

  40. I always say something about the Duggars just freaks me out. I can't imagine that many kids in one house not being some kind of horrific nightmare. Out of curiosity I checked out the recipe for the laundry detergent and although it is not something I might try at home I did notice some of the food recipes and I am anxious to try them out.

  41. My husband and I just recently started watching the show. My husband is an accountant and always trying to cut spending, especially now. We joked about making our own laundry soap. Let us know if it works!!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I love the show...totally fascinating! They are so conservative but seem like good parents...I love that Jim Bob uses a whole can of hairspray in his hair!

    ReplyDelete
  43. You know it's going to happen eventually....and lets face it...the odds are NOT in their favor. How can you keep that many kids in line lol

    ReplyDelete
  44. The mom would just smile and say nice things... I honestly think it's the only response to life that she knows. Now, Jim Bob, well, he might explode if one of his charges had an independent thought.

  45. I love those Duggers.

That pretty little cousin very well may corrupt the little J's ")

    Fun post ")

  46. Hi! I just found your blog...very cute! I laughed when I read your post about the Duggers. They live right down the rode from me & they have been local "celebrities" for as long as I can remember. They have always been exactly how they are on TV...always dress the same, always extremely well behaved in public & yet always somewhat reclusive (except when Jim Bob ran for State Rep). It's extremely surreal to see someone that you know (he graduated high school with my brother) on TV. I keep hoping some day I might just see the girls in T-shirts & jeans playing in the yard. But I'm not holding my breath.

  47. I can't wait to find out how you like the laundry detergent. I've been wanting to try it. My sister plans to try it out, I'll let you know what she thinks.

By the way, this show is one that drives me crazy, but keeps me watching at the same time. I think they do have some great values, and ideals, and hey in the world we live in today, got to hand it to them, they are doing a good job. I agree with you though, at one point, one of the kids is going to rebel, and it will be interesting to see how they handle that.
